Beginning in 1941 Peggy ventured down from her home in North Dakota to join Benny Goodman’s band in Chicago. She was a replacement for Helen Forrest and because the band had arranged the songs in Forrest’s key, Lee was forced to sing them in the arrangement set for Helen. Later she would hone a style comparable to no one else. She sang behind the beat phrasing every word to perfection.
