Bing Crosby sang “Old Man River” during his second year of stardom, around 1928, with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. The music was written by Jerome Kern and the lyric was written by Oscar Hammerstein and was originally included in the 1927 Broadway musical “Showboat.”

Bing did a song once on the Jackie Gleason Show called “There’s Nothing That I Haven’t Sung About” which he later included on his 1976ish album “Feels Good Feels Right.”

“Yes, musically I’ve been around
I’ve covered almost every town
I’ve always been a vocal gadabout.
From the Swanee River, to Galloway Bay,
Acheson, Topeka and the Santa Fe
There’s nothing that I haven’t sung about.”

Rightly so Bing could say this and it is still true, with over 1700 songs under his belt he is still the most electronically record voice of all time. “Old Man River” was Crosby’s 2nd number 1 hit and kept him rolling along with many more in the years to come.
