RPM RECORDS/COLUMBIA RECORDS TONY BENNETT CHRISTMAS ALBUMTony Bennett records his first holiday CD in forty years since his 1968 release of “SNOWFALL,” and this latest project, “TONY BENNETT: A SWINGIN’ CHRISTMAS Featuring The Count Basie Big Band,” is destined to become an annual favorite of the season. Featuring 11 tracks, Tony swings such classics as “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and the CD introduces his daughter, Antonia, who duets with Tony on “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” Phil Ramone, who has worked with Bennett on several of his recent outings including the multi-platinum “Duets: An American Classic,” produced the CD. Danny Bennett, Tony’s son and manager, is Executive producer. The recording and mixing was handled by Bennett’s son, Dae Bennett, owner of Bennett Studios. The CD will be available everywhere on October 14 on RPM Records/Columbia Records.

Starting at the beginning is always a good idea. In May 1936, on the 14th day, during the last quarter moon of the month, Bobby Darin Was born. He was born with rheumatic fever to a poor Italian family. The fever damaged his heart and would cause him strife throughout his entire life. Having only been given to the age of 16 to live he proved them wrong…Evolution became the key to his success.

In October of 1960 both Ann-Margret and Al Hirt were booked into the Dunes Hotel Lounge in Las Vegas, NV.  This engagement was before A-M had been formerly discovered by George Burns and well before Al recorded his signature sound at RCA Victor.

Ella Fitzgerald - Get Ready

I just purchased a bulk lot of old jazz and r&b records and didn’t think twice when I saw that Ella Fitzgerald was one of the artists in the lot. The cover of the Reprise album “Ella” was very unassuming.  I did assume it was just a compilation of songs from previous recordings.  Until I read the label.  OMG is all I could say.  I put it on and I was floored.  I was like why hasn’t someone written about this album before.

In my opinion, a pop standard is any song that has been performed or recorded by several people. Something that when you hear the words you are able to sing along. Or for lack of a better term we could refer to them as covers. Some may disagree with me stating that a pop standard, a rock standard, or any standard for that matter is the original version that we remember (the one that was drilled into the heads of the world). Read the first line again…I hope this conveys….if everyone is singing it it’s part of our lives.
